Improv Fundamentals (Tom & Nami)

Instructors Tom Shannon and Nami Eskandarian are here to help students new to improvisation take their first steps on a hilarious journey of fun and self-discovery. Unlock your talents while exploring the techniques of improvisational theatre. This seven-week class will conclude with a performance at the Alliance Theater on Wednesday, March 11th.

Tom Shannon - Instructor

Tom Shannon has been studying and performing unscripted theater since 2000. A graduate of the conservatory programs at IO (ImprovOlympic) West, Second City Los Angeles, and bang. Comedy Theatre, Tom also studied improv techniques for scripted material at the Stephen Book Acting Workshop, and in 2013 Tom spent 10 days with legendary improv coach, Keith Johnstone. Tom is a founding member of the teams COMRADE!, Hot Toddy, and Park City Improv, and starting in 2010 ran a weekly drop in class in Los Angeles before moving to Salt Lake, where he ran a monthly drop in class from 2013-2020, which resumed in 2025. As a member of the Applied Improvisation Network since 2014, Tom coaches businesses and groups to collaborate and communicate better. Tom believes everything you do can inform your improv and improv can inform everything you do.

Nami Eskandarian - Assistant Instructor

Nami Eskandarian is an actor/comedian based in Salt Lake City, Utah. With nearly a decade of improv experience, Nami has been involved with multiple improv productions around the valley, including Improv Avenue, Improv Salt Lake, and Improv Broadway. Nami also produces the only free weekly improv workshop in Utah under Open Improv, where anybody is welcome to attend!

Improv Fundamentals (Kayt & Kyle)

This newest offering from improv Salt Lake focuses on the fundamental tools of improvisation.  Taught by Kayt Sawyer (UCB, The Blue Door Theatre) and Kyle Smith (Improv Ave.).  This course will run from February 2, 2026 - March 23, 2026. (NO Class Feb. 23!) and will conclude with a performance at The Alliance Theatre.  Classes are held Monday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00pm.

Kayt

Kayt Sawyer - Instructor

Kayt has been involved in improv, theatre, and sketch comedy for over 20 years. She started taking classes in 2001 while still in high school. After high school she pursued a degree in Theatre Arts and English Literature. She studied improv and sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York while attending NYU. After returning to Utah she taught theatre arts and English literature classes for 3 years before moving to Washington to attend law school. In Washington she performed, taught, and directed shows with The Blue Door Theatre and worked as their Community Education Director. Kayt returned to Utah in 2015 performing with many local improv and sketch comedy groups. She is graduate of Weber State University, University of Utah, and Gonzaga University. In her (limited) free time she enjoys traveling, reading, Muay Thai, and anything that allows her to bring her 4 dogs along!
